Every year, 1–7 August is observed as World Breastfeeding Week to raise awareness & promote breastfeeding.The 2026 theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” encourages us to recognize successful breastfeeding practices learn from them and strengthen the systems that help mothers and babies.In 2026, focuses on strengthening approaches that are already working.Over the years, different themes have highlighted various aspects of breastfeeding, including health, community support, policies, sustainability and the importance of creating supportive environments.

History 
The modern breastfeeding advocacy movement has important roots in the Innocenti Declaration of 1990.The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was established in 1991.The first World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated in 1992.Since then, World Breastfeeding Week has been observed annually from 1–7 August.Supported by WHO, UNICEF and many Ministries of Health and civil society partners.It is celebrated worldwide by healthcare professionals, governments, organizations, educational institutions, families and communities to protect and support breastfeeding.

Importance of Breastfeeding
1. Provides complete nutrition

  • Breast milk contains the balanced amount of nutrients such as protein, fats, vitamins, and carbohydrates needed for a baby’s growth during the first six months of life.
  • It is easy to digest and is always clean and at the required temperature.

2. Boosts the baby’s immune system

  • Breast milk contains antibodies which help to protect babies from infections such as diarrhea, pneumonia and respiratory illnesses.
  • It reduces the risk of allergies and some chronic diseases later in life.

3. Promotes healthy growth and development

  • Supports healthy brain development and helps to improve their cognitive development.
  • Helps babies achieve healthy weight gain.
